😺 OpenAI's leaked AGI roadmap

PLUS: We're cheating on ChatGPT...

Welcome, humans.

I’ve never dated two people at once (what do you take me for…an NBA star!!), but I can only imagine that it’s similar to how I feel when I use ChatGPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet in the same browser. I rotate between both constantly, and it feels downright sneaky, like I’m cheating on both of them.

Do I clue in the other AI about my poly-digital love life? Do I admit I'm not ready to settle down with just one chatbot? Send help!

Here’s what you need to know about AI today:

  • OpenAI has a five-tier path to achieving AGI.

  • China is beating the US when it comes to AI adoption.

  • Perplexity plans to kick off a revenue-sharing model with publishers.

  • There’s a new AI assistant that reads your screen to answer questions.

OpenAI thinks we’re at Level 2 out of 5 of its new 5-tier AGI ranking system.

OpenAI always talks about how its ultimate mission is to build AGI that benefits humanity. AGI = an AI that can perform every human task—writing, coding, you name it—as well as we do.

Consider this: if ChatGPT can replace five copywriters, AGI could replace an entire company—from the C-suite to marketing and beyond.

AGI is considered ā€œLevel 5ā€ in OpenAI’s new internal classification system.

According to a company insider, OpenAI recently laid out its blueprint for building AGI at an all-hands meeting this week. Here’s what it looks like:

  • Level 1: Chatbots: what we currently have.

  • Level 2: Reasoners: PhD-level problem solvers.

  • Level 3: Agents: AI systems that can spend days taking actions for you.

  • Level 4: Innovators: your AI version of Thomas Edison.

  • Level 5: Organizations: a single AI doing the job of a whole company.

Apparently, we're on the cusp of Level 2. OpenAI execs used the meeting to demonstrate a new research project that the company believes rises to human-like reasoning

Some on X speculated this research could be related to OpenAI’s secretive Q* project, while others debated if Level 5 is AGI or if AGI is actually more likely somewhere between Levels 3 and 4.

Google DeepMind has its own AGI scale, which defines each level as the percentile of skilled adults in which the AI falls.

Our take? This is essentially OpenAI’s roadmap for the future of ChatGPT. And cause it’s OpenAI, it's a roadmap for the future of AI.

If today’s top chatbots are Level 1, then the next big product launch (after Voice Mode/screen-sharing) could be an AI smarter than your most brilliant friend.

And if we’re still writing this newsletter by the time Q* rolls around, we’ll see agents that automate entire jobs, AI inventing things, and an AI that can run a whole company.

Hear that company?! Now I’m going to replace you!
