😺 SearchGPT is HERE.

PLUS: Google's new AI is a math Olympiad...

Welcome, humans.

AI boyfriends are back in the news, and apparently they’re taking off—literally. They come with a new ā€œghostingā€ feature. It's just like a real relationship, except the AI actually tells you why it's not responding instead of leaving you on read for a week.

ā€œHi, I'm breaking up with you because your Wi-Fi is too slow, and long-distance relationships across different servers just aren't my thing."

Here’s what you need to know about AI today:

  • OpenAI announced SearchGPT, its own search engine.

  • Google DeepMind’s AI scored a silver medal in the Olympics of math.

  • Runway likely trained its video model on thousands of YouTube videos without permission.

  • A deepfake AI porn bill unanimously passed the U.S. Senate.

OpenAI announced a competitor to Google: SearchGPT.

SearchGPT

OpenAI finally announced its long-anticipated search engine and competitor to Google: SearchGPT. To start, it’s rolling out to a limited group of users.

Here’s what we noticed right away:

  • The UI looks fast, clean and similar to Perplexity

  • The results are multimodal (meaning it can spit out stock graphs, weather images, videos, etc).

  • Most important: There’s a huge emphasis on the fact that when you search for something, SearchGPT cites its answers…always (probably why OpenAI signed deals w/ so many publishers—it doesn’t want to piss them off more than they already are).

Google stock dropped 2% on the news.

Many discussions around this launch revolve around how this product poses a serious threat to any company that’s trying to build the future of search, including Perplexity and, yes, Google.

Before, you could argue that ChatGPT was an alternative (but not a direct competitor) to Google. With SearchGPT, you can’t. This is OpenAI saying, ā€œWe’re coming for you, Google.ā€

Just look at Sam’s tweet:

Anecdotally, we’ve noticed that Google’s AI search SGE has been rolled way back after a few too many public blunders (try it yourself, see if it works). Some speculate it could eventually become a paid feature.

Now that OpenAI’s made the first move, Google might have to counterpunch and ā€œroll backā€ the rollback. Interestingly, SearchGPT documents revealed it will collect and share your local data with ā€œthird-party search providersā€ to provide more accurate results. So, does that mean, like, Googling stuff?

If you’re interested, you can join the waitlist here. But don’t expect to get access so soon. After all, this is just an announcement… from OpenAI.

Y’know, the same company that announced a new Voice chat back in May (and still isn’t out), and Sora video generator back in February (and still isn’t out).

Our take? ChatGPT is already a search engine…it’s just a very slow one. You can @ Bing to search anything from across the internet, but you might have to wait 3-5 seconds for an answer, and in the world of search, that’s an eternity.

SearchGPT could shake things up. It’s precisely the type of product people say will be the future of search—give me the answer, not a bunch of links for me to find it myself.
